Faking it?

Are you faking it? Using fake ID has some real consequences for the user.

A possible fraud conviction under the Criminal code that could affect:

       • Employment
       • Education
       • Opportunity of travelling outside of Canada

What does “Faking it” include?

Faking it is about using Fraudulent Identification (Fake ID). There are generally three major forms that Fake ID takes;

1. Borrowing an ID from an older sibling, friend or peer
2. Creating a new ID which resembles legal identification
3. Modifying an existing ID to alter the birthdate

A situation to Fake it?...

You’re new on campus and some friends ask you to “Fake It” to get into a cool bar on Saturday night and join them. These are new friends that you want to get to know better – AND you have nothing planned for Saturday anyway?

1. You “Fake It” and borrow some ID, hoping you don’t get caught.

If you do get caught, the ID is usually turned over to the police. Depending where you live, the legal consequences vary, both for you ad the person who lent you the ID>.

2. Say to your friend – “ Hey, I can’t get into that bar- can we meet at a place where it is all ages to get in.”

If you drive you can consider being the designated driver if your friends are drinking.

I Fake it. What’s the big deal?

Well, it can turn into a big deal.

Like:

        • Getting your real driver’s license suspended
        • A monetary fine
        • You put the lender at risk of consequences which can put friction into the relationship
        • A possible fraud conviction under the criminal code that could affect”
        • Employment
        • Education
        • Opportunity of travelling outside of Canada

I help my friend fake it, What’s the big deal?

Lending out your ID could have some real consequences for you. Your license can be confiscated by the law enforcement…And the consequences are:

        • You may be fined
        • Your driver’s licensed may be suspended
        • You could be sued

Lost your ID?

Have you lost your wallet? There are steps you can take to protect yourself from identity theft or from someone using your ID;

        • Contact your local police to let them know it is missing.
        • Contact your financial institutions and credit card companies so they can cancel your cards.
        • Contact government offices to report your lost government identification and cards.

Everyone else is NOT doing it.

If you are borrowing a friends ID or altering your ID to get into bar or to purchase alcohol, the consequences can outweigh the benefits. Like the benefit of fitting in with friends. Sometimes we think that everyone else is going to clubs, or everyone else is drinking. If you are having trouble adjusting to your environment, or saying no to your peers, you are not alone. You don’t need alcohol to have a good time with friends and meet new people. In fact 86% of students on Canadian campuses agree that you don’t need alcohol to make friends (Canadian Campus Survey 2003)
