Study finds campus drinking is effectively reduced by brief online interventions
September 16, 2009
A recent study from researchers in Australia and New Zealand found that internet-based screening and brief interventions has a very effective impact on problem drinking on campus.
After one month, participants who received online motivational feedback therapy drank less often and drank in smaller quantities than did the control groups.
This web-based electronic screening and brief intervention (e-SBI) was well received by students, which led researchers to suggest these methods could see widespread application in high schools, in hospitals, and in general practice.
Parents should keep this in mind; let your students know that there are many online resources available for help if it is needed. Sometimes a quick internet search for a website or online-resources is quicker and more accessible for students than going into a face-to-face meeting, and is often far less confrontational.
