Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier, the director of student health services at McGill University in Montreal, is working directly with campuses across the country to discuss flu planning and to get students ready to handle any compromising situations they may encounter this flu season. The flu seasons is a regular concern on campus, due to the close proximity and interaction between students. But this year, concerns are higher than normal.
Students are receiving letters advising them to bring their own hand sanitizers and thermometers to monitor their own temperatures. Also, if students are feeling ill, they are encouraged to avoid crowds and to stay in their room. Some campuses, like the University of Toronto, are offering to deliver meals to sick students in their dorm.
If the flu season is a concern to you this year, make sure your son or daughter is aware of their campuses illness and health promotion procedures and services. Encourage them to call you if they are experiencing stronger than normal flu symptoms, and let them know their campus has many different ways to tackle the issue.
