Nearly One in Five University Students Experienced Violence in Last Six Months: UBC Study

Posted on August 5th, 2009

While attending post-secondary, men are equally likely as women to have been victims of physical or emotional violence, and that violence is often linked to drinking, according to a new study led by University of British Columbia.

These findings challenge misperceptions that only women are victims of violence, and that it is not common enough to warrant some concern.  Interestingly enough, most of violence reported (50% emotional, 20% physical) comes from intimate partners.  Also, the study found alcohol consumption puts both young men and young women at greater risk of becoming victims of violence. The study suggests campus health services need to do more to screen for victims of violence amongst students, and should work to send a message that relationships should be safe, healthy and happy.

Knowing it is not an entirely rare occurrence, and that it can happen equally to women and men, it can be helpful for parents to be aware of these issues.  If you suspect your son or daughter is a victim of violence, let them know it doesn’t have to accepted, and they should be encouraged to talk to someone about it.
