A new service helps students professionally develop their online presence

September 23, 2009

WhyHire.me has been launched to help students grow their own online presence using coaching, branding techniques, and social media tools.  Students can learn to digitalize their resume by integrating blogs, photos, videos, news feeds and Twitter.

An instructor at Algonquin College, Patti Church, said, "You know, you have an opportunity to position yourself strategically over the next three years or you can sit back passively and assume the paper’s going to do the work for you... The reality is the market’s changed and you need to think more strategically."

This service has been so successful, that some schools, like Algonquin College, Carleton University and Centennial College have implemented WhyHire.me as a mandatory part of their curriculum for business programs.

Not only does it help students match their career/professional skills with an ever digitalizing practical environment, but it also helps them identify strengths and weaknesses in their own self-promoting and can help them analyze their achievements, passions and interests.

Andy Church, who co-founded WhyHire.me with Patti Church, said, "regardless of what their future career will be, students have an opportunity to show initiative, demonstrate passion and leadership by having an online presence, following industry topics and commenting on them."  "We envision the 21st century student as being someone who understands how to research using the web, how to drive agendas,” he added. “Whether you’re in policy or you’re in marketing, we see this is as a foundation set of skills.”

For $29, students can set up an account, which gives them access to an e-book with learning materials, access to presentation slides, and profile hosting for 12 months.

Parents interested in helping their young students transition effectively to the dynamic world of employment and hiring should not underestimate the growing importance of an online presence.  Students are already very savvy with technology, which means there is plenty of opportunities for them to learn to tweak and develop their skills to help them get their name out there.
